○ Definition of Yodel |
It is written as 'Jodel' or 'Jodle' in German, 'Yodel' or 'Yodle' in
English, and '요델' or '요들' in Korean.
Phonetically, it is a vocalizationthat produces a kind of rupture sound by rapidly intersecting the thoracic and head voices. This form of vocalization can also be found in various folk musicaround the world, but in Yodel, it can be largely divided into Alpine Style's Yodel music, which has developed as a folk music of surrounding countries centered on the Alps, and Western Style's Yodel music, centered on the western United States. |
○ What is Alpine Yodel? |
It refers to the yodel of all parts of Switzerland (the Tyrol region of
Austria and the Bavarian region of Germany) around the Alps, and the hypothesis
of origin varies.
1. Used to gather scattered flocks or cows. 2. Imitated the sounds of birds and beasts. 3. It arose from the respect felt by humans in front of the mysterious mountain. 4. Used for magical purposes to defeat natural disasters. 5. It was used as a means of communication between high mountain peaks. To date, Hypothesis No. 5 is considered a common theory, and studies have shown that the characteristic vocalization and beat of German consonants and vowels can be sufficiently used as a good means of communication to avoid the crushing effect of echoes and repeated sounds. As evidenced by Hypothesis 5, the characteristics of the alpine yodel are divided into two genres: natur yodel, which only cries vocals without lyrics, and yodel songs with yodel in the chorus of songs with lyrics. |
○ Western Yodel? |
It refers to Yodel, which is called the folk country style in the whole
region, mainly in the western United States, and there are also several
hypotheses about its origin.
1. First started by people who migrated to the US from the Swiss Alps. 2. It was spread by American missionaries who visited Switzerland for missionary work. 3. It was spread by musicians to neighboring countries (Germany, Austria, etc.) adjacent to Switzerland. Commercially, Carter Family, an early American folk singer, and Jimmy Rodgers, the father of country music, presented another Yodel style than Alpine. Since then, yodel feeling has often been featured in genres such as bluegrass and western swing, which has become an important place in traditional American music. Since then, songs with Yodel in the middle of a fork that was popular in the United States are collectively called Western Yodel. The lyrics are mostly light, cheerful, and cheerful Yodel, such as life in the vast West of the United States, travel stories with a challenging spirit, cowboys, or lovers' love stories, but sometimes, through genres such as black lovers, it also gives an emotional, satirical feel to society. In addition, it is divided into Swiss Yodel, European Yodel, and American Yodel. However, this distinction is not an absolute distinction method because of the characteristics of the oral folk song Yodel, and not all Yodel follow the same genre. |
○ KOREA Yodel? |
It is estimated that there are various routes through which Yodel was
introduced to Korea.
1. Before and after liberation, it was transmitted from Manchurian climbers. 2. It was spread through Japanese culture. 3. It was spread from foreign multinational soldiers who participated in the war. For the first official record, there was a Yodel song called "Eureity of Love" on Chae Kyu-yeop's album, which was released in 1934. In 1968, Kim Hong-chul, the father of Korean Yodel music, went to Switzerland to study in Yodel, and it has since spread through active performance activities. Since the establishment of the Seoul Edelweiss Yodel Club in 1969, more than 10 representative Yodel clubs have been established and active in the metropolitan area and provinces, and various types of related clubs and choirs have held regular meetings and presentations. |
※ For reference, the expression 'yodel song' was created by the media to distinguish genres when Yodel began to spread in Korea. It's a generalized expression over the years, so it's usually just used interchangeably, but the Yodel-learned fraternity calls it "Yodel". |
○ Yodel's basic vocalization! |
※ Here, expressions such as authenticity, falsetto, and head voice are
borrowed for explanation, and they are vocalizations that have unique characteristics different from vocalization. |
▷ Chest voice (Original voice) | - It's the most natural sound a human can make. |
- You can think of the sound of 'Yah~ho!' at the top of the mountain. | |
▷ Head voice (falsetto voice) | - It is a sound made by pulling the sound up to the top of the head and giving an echo. |
(resonance) | |
▷ right-angled vocalization | - It is a sound made by rapidly crossing the original voice and falsetto voice. |
- There is a rapid change in sound, such as 5 degrees, 6 degrees, or 1 octave. |
